Dr Ana Belén Pérez Oliva, with other collaborators, was rewarded with one of the prizes for her project entitled “Inflammasome: a new therapeutic target to treat anaemia”. It assigns a possible role for the inflammasome (a multiprotein complex mostly involved in inflammation processes) in genetical disorders such as thalassaemia.
The participation of the inflammasome in diseases that do not have an inflammatory origin is a growing field, yet to be explored. This is what the research group led by Dr Pérez Oliva, the Oncoimmunology, Congenital Anaemia and Inflammation (OCAI) group, is working on at the facilities of the Instituto Murciano de Investigación Biosanitaria (IMIB), attached to the Hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca.
